Printing Steps

NetLabels offers several features to keep your data safe.

Below is an overview of NetLabels, presented chronologically through the steps label printing. The emphasis is on the security features and precautions built into the architecture of NetLabels.

  • NetLabels can be used anywhere in your company, world-wide. Any PC with Internet access can print sample labels TODAY.

  • The FIRST TIME you use NetLabels to print labels, you must download the "Java Plug-in version 1.3" from Sun Microsystems to your browser. It is available for download from: http://java.sun.com/products/archive/j2se/1.3.1_02/jre/index.html
This browser plug-in was created by Sun Microsystems and allows Java software to run on many different web browsers, types of hardware, and operating systems, including Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP. Currently, NetLabels is only setup to run on the Windows platform.

  • Go to www.netlabels.com on the Internet and select "Print Labels". You can use Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Mozilla as your web browser. The Java Plug-in starts and runs the NetLabels Java applet from the HTML web page.

  • NetLabels software is downloaded from our web server to your web browser. The download takes about 1 minute at modem speed, or a few seconds with a high-speed connection. You always get the LATEST VERSION of NetLabels downloaded automatically, if the software has been updated since your last visit. NetLabels can work through Firewalls and most Proxy Servers that may reside on the customer's network. It communicates only with the web server at www.netlabels.com. If you would like more information on Java, please visit Sun Microsystems' web site at http://java.sun.com and http://java.sun.com/nav/whatis.

  • The NetLabels software is ENCRYPTED with a 128-bit digital certificate from Thawte (owned by Verisign), so you can be SURE that the software has NOT been tampered with since GBS installed it on the web server. Your browser would REFUSE TO RUN any software that had been "hacked" or modified in any way.

  • The User must EXPLICITLY ALLOW NetLabels to run on each computer. The Thawte digital certificate is presented the first time you run NetLabels. The user gets a message indicating the software, coming from the public Internet, is potentially dangerous and should only be run if the user TRUSTS GBS Corp., owner of the digital certificate. If the User selects "Grant All", then this message will never be displayed again. If the User selects just "Grant", the message is shown EACH TIME NetLabels is run on that PC.

  • NetLabels starts up and runs inside your PC's web browser.

  • The user must enter a valid UserID and Password. GBS maintains passwords in encrypted format. Users who don't have an assigned password can log on as guest, but can only print one page at a time - the labels will have the word S-A-M-P-L-E printed across the centerline.

  • The user selects a label style from the list of available label styles. Most users have only one style available for printing, but there is no limit. You can view over 2,500 existing label designs.

  • If there are identifying features, such as a customer Logo or company name on the label, then access to view and print that label design is restricted to:
    • the NetLabels dealer who services the customer
    • customer with specific passwords
    • GBS employees

  • Next, tell NetLabels about the source of your label data - type it in via keyboard or open a file containing label data.

  • Once you have defined the label data to be printed, NetLabels draws each label and sends it from the PC directly to the Printer (NOT over the Internet).

  • NetLabels sends 2 types of log data back to our web server. Our goal in logging this information is to record usage of NetLabels for billing and tracking purposes. Using these logs, we are able to summarize NetLabels usage by User, time period, style number, etc.

The data below is sent from the User's browser directly to the web server:

When you log on to NetLabels, the log files on our server capture:

    • Date/Time
    • UserID
    • Web Browser version
    • Internet Host (the name of the Internet Host computer that the User is accessing NetLabels from - this is a computer owned by the User's Internet Service Provider or ISP)

When you PRINT labels, the NetLabels log files capture:

    • Date/Time
    • UserID
    • Browser version
    • Internet Host
    • Type of print request (List of Labels, Single Numeric Range, Multiple Numeric Ranges, or Data File)
    • For a File, the File Name (if the data is being imported from a data file - not shown if you use the "anonymous" sample data file from our web server)
    • For a "List of Labels", the LENGTH of each data field typed in [but the CONTENTS ARE NOT CAPTURED].
    • For Single Numeric Range and Multiple Numeric Ranges, the Start/End Pairs are captured, along with any Prefix (such as a Year Band)
    • Number of labels printed
    • Number of pages printed
    • NetLabels label Style Number and Keywords describing the attributes of the label printed

This is ALL of the information captured over the Internet. NONE of it contains any identifying customer information.
